The great British summer… Not renowned for being the most predictable weather-wise, it has to be said. Although we may plan for long lazy afternoons on the beach relaxing with a good book while the kids make sandcastles and hunt for crabs, it’s never a sure bet. Despair not. At the heart of Leigh Broadway is a sanctuary for you, your book, and the kids. A welcoming hub for bibliophiles and coffee-lovers alike. Here, you’ll find offerings both on the shelves and the cake stand to delight all ages. And if you prefer to enjoy your literature with a glass of vino, well that’s fine too… Introducing Read-on-Sea, the creation of Manuel Scettri.
Manuel opened Read-on-Sea in December 2023 with the aim of answering the town’s call for a great independent book shop — and that’s exactly what he’s achieved.
A cosy children’s corner is nestled away at furthest end of the store. Meanwhile, for adults, an impressive selection spanning a variety of genres, adorns the striking turquoise bookshelves. Whether it’s a juicy thriller, an autobiography or perhaps even something by a local author – you’re sure to find it here. “We can also order almost any book at no extra cost,” Manuel says, “It’s usually in the next day (unless it’s Sunday). And you get a free coffee when you come to pick it up.”
If you’re very lucky, you may even time your visit to coincide with one of Read-on-Sea’s events. There are regular talks with authors, children’s readings, poetry readings and live music events in the evenings. Every Tuesday morning at 11am, Manuel reads the first chapter of a book and, of course, there’s the monthly book club.
Manuel says, “Our book club is a wonderful event where members enjoy the bookshop after hours, chatting about that month’s book. They can have a drink in a relaxed atmosphere amongst friends and see where the conversation takes them.”
